Positive and Negative Experiences With Supportive Services and Programming: Gaps and Recommendations From Youth Experiencing Homelessness

Services for youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) are designed with limited input from the themselves. This study explored experiences and recommendations services aimed at mitigating negative effects of among youth. A total 45 interviews were conducted YEH (ages 15 to 24, M = 21.5 years) who experienced least one night homelessness. Transcripts coded by using a modified constructivist grounded theory approach. reported myriad challenges navigating disjointed programming misguided policies. Recommendations policy programmatic change include peacekeeping diffusion training program staff, trauma-informed approaches, conflict resolution agency staff; integrate creative outlets transitional into existing programs. Programming supporting must extend beyond meeting only basic needs creating opportunities safety, autonomy, growth. Programs targeting need in their design implementation.
